If you don’t already know, DEA stands for the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency. According to the DEA’s mission statement, the DEA is responsible for enforcing controlled substance laws and is shouldered with the responsibility of bringing growers, manufacturers, and distributors of controlled substances to justice.
Unfortunately, in doing so, the DEA and the United States government as a whole has created an incarceration system that has restricted and abolished rights for a large number of Americans. Americans’ want and/or need to use drugs has been greatly underestimated, resulting in the mass incarceration of people in need of help.
The United States’ Drug Enforcement Agency has been under fire for years as a result of unwanted effects from the Drug War, but is it fair to blame the DEA? While some say yes, others say no, and both sides have valid points.
HOW DEA ENFORCEMENT WORKS
It is important to note that the DEA does not create the laws pertaining to drugs, they simply enforce the laws that have been put in place by the Federal Government under the U.S. Department of Justice. Their main purpose is to enforce the Controlled Substances Act within the United States (with concurrent jurisdiction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation). The DEA is also responsible for United States drug investigations abroad.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Admittedly, there are not a lot of accomplishments to be found highlighting the positive contributions of the DEA to American society. However, there have been numerous high-profile drug busts over the years that have resulted in the loss of billions of dollars collectively to drug cartels and illegal drug operations.
DEA agents have given their lives in the pursuit of a drug-free America. While this may seem unrealistic today, there was a time that many Americans felt illegal drugs could be irradiated through harsh penalties and laws. Those brave men and women fought to uphold laws that our society created, and they have been doing a commendable, if not great, job. Problem is, these laws have been proven to be largely ineffective.
CRITICISMS
While there are some instances where individual DEA agents’ actions and their motives have been called into question, these instances are, for the most part, few and far between. Some DEA agents have been accused of horrific deeds, but their actions should be considered unusual.
